Holiday activities for family members coping with dementia
The following tips will help you and your dementia patient visit and reconnect with family, friends, and neighbors during the holidays.
The holidays can be an enriching and meaningful time for both the person with dementia and their family. Adopting and maintaining family rituals and traditions helps all family members feel a sense of belonging and contributes to family identity. For the person with dementia, the connection to a familiar past is a source of security.
It is important to remember that families often prefer avoidance over coping – and are once again left alone.
The goal is to help families prepare for this period in advance - as much as possible; the key to this is planning, openness and sharing.
