Accessible equipment for people with dementia

Starting in May 2024, this will be handled by the professional bodies in the health insurance funds, without the involvement of the Ministry of Health in decision-making, approvals, and the provision of accessible equipment. This will enable ongoing continuity of medical care.
These include mobility devices such as: manual wheelchairs and strollers, home medical beds, patient transfer lifts, wheelchair cushions and inserts, walkers, stepladders, and more.
To obtain accessible equipment, contact the family physician of the person with dementia , who will send a referral to the home care department of the aforementioned health insurance company.
Please note: When contacting your family doctor, it is always important to consistently inform and update the doctor about your health condition so that everything is updated in the medical file, including letters from professional doctors (geriatrician, neurologist, psychiatrist).
The family doctor sends the referral to the health insurance company's home care department, and then a physiotherapist/occupational therapist arrives, in coordination with you and the family, and checks what equipment is required for accessibility and nursing assistance. She then sends her recommendations for approval by the health insurance company.
Until approvals and eligibility are received, it is recommended to rent (and not buy!) accessible equipment.
When you receive eligibility for accessible equipment, you receive a list of suppliers for each approved equipment and you choose a supplier.
After you have chosen a supplier for each accessible equipment, you contact the supplier and receive the equipment. It is possible to come to the supplier's store and be impressed by the equipment.
It is recommended to keep all the paperwork from each supplier and all the equipment that was provided because when the time comes, at the end of use, each supplier must return the equipment they provided and sign that the equipment has been returned and keep all the paperwork.
To collect or repair the device, contact the service center of the insuring health fund (except for motorized chairs, crawlers - mobile stairlifts, assistive and alternative communication systems, the repair of which is still the responsibility of the Ministry of Health).
