It's not easy to care for a person with dementia, but alongside the difficulty there are also small, strengthening moments. Moments of a smile, a hug, a flash of a familiar memory. Moments of emotional connection and kindness.
Here are short tips that can create moments of peace for you and recharge your batteries for the whole day:
- Set a “Daily Good Moment”: Write/photograph a smile, a word, or a small hug, emotional fuel for both of you. Focusing on positive emotions has been found to reduce stress among caregivers.
- Activate your sensesA favorite song, the smell of fresh bread, an old photo – triggers that invite memory and conversation.
- Memorial Corner: An album/box of memories and open questions (“Who was with you?”, “What did you like there?”) – contribute to mood and connection.
- Intergenerational connection: Sing with a grandchild or read a short passage together. Shared music improves emotional well-being.
- Short and sweet: Choose simple activities with quick success (easy game, picture-word matches) according to current ability.
Remember : one good moment a day is worth a lot.
